Clarification on Fiber Connection Type (XGS-PON or AON)

Hello there!

I am a new Odido customer and joined in January. At the end of January, I visited an Odido office and expressed my wish to switch from Ziggo to Odido, as I wanted a higher upstream speed than what Ziggo offers with DOCSIS.

Since I didn’t have a fiber optic connection point in my apartment, they informed me that Odido would send someone to install the connection. I waited patiently until today (March 3) and also received a Zyxel T-56 router by post (though I’m not sure why it’s labeled as a "modem" on the box, as it seems to be just an Ethernet router).

Today, two technicians from KPN came and installed an optical socket in my apartment. However, I did not receive an ONT (XGS-PON) or NTU (AON), so I still don’t have a device for Optical to Ethernet conversion. When I called Odido, they told me they would send me "something" additionally but did not clarify what type of equipment it would be.

Is there any way I can determine whether my connection is XGS-PON or AON?

Thank you in advance!

Finally, the Guidion technician arrived on time, activated everything very quickly, and we tested the connection on the Zyxel T-56. After that, I installed my own MikroTik, set up VLANs, and configured everything I needed.

And… it looks like I'm now a happy Odido user 😀

Hello @Decker

I think it will most probably be XGSPON since KPN is only installing PON networks nowadays.

Thanks for the answer. And probably one last question.

In the case of XGS-PON, is each connection tied to specific ONT parameters such as Serial Number (S/N), LOID?

In other words, can I buy a used XGS-PON ONT on Marktplaats and start using it right away, or do I have to wait for Odido to ship me a new one?

Right now, I haven’t received any confirmation that it was sent—no tracking number, nothing. Just an email with generic excuses like:

"You are of course eagerly awaiting your Odido for home order. We are busy activating your connection, but this will be later than we agreed, sorry for this."

@Decker

You will receive an ONT, the serial number will need to be registered on your line and than it will work.

You can buy an ONT from marktplaats but it will not work straight away, the serial number needs to get registered by Odido.

the serial number needs to get registered by Odido.

Thanks for the previous answer. Do you know, how difficult is the S/N registration process? Is it as simple as filling out a web form or sending an email request? Or does it require calling support, waiting on hold, and then trying to explain to someone—who may not typically handle such requests—exactly what you need?

In other words, can it be done quickly, or does it take days as well?

@Decker

Once you have the ONT go to your community profile, fill in the serial number under info voor de moderators and also fill in the other privé fields

Once a moderator sees this topic than they just need to register the serial number in their system. Less than 1 minute it takes :)

Wow! That sounds perfect. A brand-new Nokia XGS-PON from Marktplaats is on its way to me—looks like this will be much faster! ;)

@Decker

I'm not sure if it will work because you don't know if yoyull be connected via KPN WBA or KPN ODF, what is the max speed possible at your address?

Also which Nokia ONT is it? The one from Delta will not work on KPN WBA.

I'm not sure if it will work because you don't know on which Fiber network you will be..

Yes, I fully understand that… but to be honest, spending €15 isn’t a big deal if it helps bring Odido into my home faster. If it doesn’t work out, well… I’ll just have a cool but useless device that I can sell on Marktplaats. ;)

what is the max speed possible at your address?

According to https://www.odido.nl/shop/internet/product/zelf-samenstellen it’s:

Glasvezel met een maximale snelheid van 1 Gbit/s download en 1 Gbit/s upload.

p.s. It’s Nokia XGS-PON ONT, XS-010X-Q KPN TK-01.

@Decker

Than it should work after a moderator can register the ONT.

Have an update. Today, the servicemens from KPN who installed the optical socket came again and brought a box with the XGS-PON ONT XS-010X-R KPN TK-01. They entered its S/N into an app on their tablet and also called someone, spelling out the serial number letter by letter for activation.

However, the connection indicator is blinking green and hasn’t established a connection yet. They said, "It's OK," and that next, someone from Odido will come to me.

Can I kindly ask the moderators to check if the S/N is correctly registered? I have filled in all the necessary details in my forum profile. Thanks in advance.

What is the status in your Odido account? I think your subscription hasn't been activated yet.

It has the status "Subscription in delivery"… Also, Phase 1 is marked as completed, while Phase 2 (Installing) is not active.

p.s. I also assume that now the physical connection has been set up correctly, but something still needs to be activated on Odido's side.

The funniest thing is that Odido sent me a second ONT box by post. So now, the first ONT was installed and registered by KPN technicians on the second day, the second ONT just arrived by post, and I expect to receive the third used ONT today. Nice to have a spare 🤣

Meanwhile, my connection LED is still blinking green, and the subscription status hasn't changed. But tomorrow, I'm expecting a Guidion technician. Hopefully, he will call Odido and get them to activate my subscription.

Honestly, all of this just seems like a huge waste of resources. I could have had a working connection a few days ago if everything had been properly coordinated. Also, I don’t even need a technician to set up the router, since I plan to use my own MikroTik device. But here we are...

IT’s kinda standard procedure to let the Guidion technician “activate” the line. If they don’t (or you do it via other channels) the whole process at Odido gets messed up and either they don’t know the subscription needs to start, or it doesn’t work and the subscription starts anyway. They don’t know how to handle different situations.

So the normal procedure is that it’s ALWAYS a Guidion technician who does the last things (connecting the ONT and active the line and subscription).

Hi @Decker I am very happy to see that the technician from Guidion was able to activate everything for you and you are able to receive a good connection now. We can officially welcome you to the Odido family! 😄 If you have any questions in the future, please know that we are always here for you!
