Formal Complaint: Misleading Information, Misconduct, and Unresolved Billing Discrepancy

I am writing to lodge a formal complaint regarding an ongoing billing issue and unacceptable treatment by your customer service team over the past two weeks.

While traveling abroad, I purchased an add-on package believing it covered standard mobile usage in the destination country based on the information provided. Due to a language barrier and ambiguous package details, I was unaware that the package exclusively covered mobile data, not voice calls. As a result, I was left stranded in another country with unexpected costs and a lack of clear communication.

When I contacted customer service while stranded abroad, I was met with complete indifference and told "it was my fault" and that I "should have checked," despite explaining my situation as an English speaker in a vulnerable position overseas.

2. Delay and Broken Promises

Following this incident, funds were debited directly from my bank account. Over the last two weeks, I have repeatedly contacted Odido to resolve this issue:

I was given specific resolution dates (including dates last week) that passed without any action or update from your side.

During subsequent phone calls, customer service agents refused to escalate the matter, spoke to me in a dismissive and rude manner, and repeatedly told me to "just wait" without providing concrete timelines or solutions.

3. Grounds for Complaint

Duty of Care & Service Transparency: As a customer, I expect clear, accessible, and unambiguous information regarding roaming packages, particularly for non-Dutch speaking customers traveling abroad.

Misconduct & Customer Treatment: Telling a customer who is stranded abroad that an issue is entirely their fault, followed by condescending and dismissive treatment over the phone, fails to meet reasonable standards of customer service.

Failure to Resolve within Promised Timelines: Failing to resolve a flagged issue after two weeks—and repeatedly missing pledged resolution deadlines—is an unacceptable handling of a disputed charge.

Hi @Aeysha ,

Google translate:

I understand that it is more difficult to purchase services if you don't understand Dutch. However, whenever I visit a website in another language, I simply use a translation tool, which allows me to make the right choices easily. It is therefore a bit unreasonable to blame the provider if information isn't automatically available in a language you can read. We live in the Netherlands, and the language here is Dutch. The Odido website—and I even checked the English translation in Chrome—clearly states that you are purchasing data (GB) for use outside the EU.

The FAQ section also includes a specific entry regarding making calls abroad. So, you could easily have found this information. Making calls abroad is indeed quite expensive; foreign operators pass those high costs on to Odido, which then passes them on to you. In a number of countries outside the EU, the "unlimited" plan can be used for calls—such as in the US, Turkey, and Switzerland.

Next time, you can easily find out the exact costs for your plan in a specific country by sending a free text message: "PRIJS <COUNTRY>" to 5545.

First of all, I understand we live in the Netherlands and that Dutch is the primary language. However, this package was not purchased by self-navigating the website. It was purchased over the phone directly with an English-speaking customer service advisor.

During that call, the advisor explicitly explained to me that I would be able to use my package as normal while abroad. Because this was explicitly confirmed verbally by an Odido representative in English, I relied on their direct instructions rather than reading separate terms and conditions online.

Furthermore, website translations are completely beside the point here. That is only one single detail, and you have completely ignored all the other critical points of my post:

The fact that I was left stranded in another country due to this advice.

The awful way I was treated when I called for support, being met with zero empathy or understanding while stuck abroad.

The broken promises regarding resolution dates over the past two weeks.

The dismissive and downright rude behavior from phone agents when following up on the money debited from my account.

A little sympathy for a customer stranded abroad due to miscommunication by your own advisor would have been the bare minimum. The way I have been spoken to and handled after the initial mistake is the primary reason for my complaint, and I expect an official Odido moderator or manager to look into this case properly.

If Odido offers an English customer service line, customers should reasonably expect that the information provided by those agents is accurate and reliable. If Odido's customer service representatives are not properly trained or capable of giving correct advice in English, then Odido simply should not offer an English language option over the phone in the first place, rather than giving misleading details and then blaming the customer afterwards.

Hi @Aeysha, welcome to our community. I’m sorry to hear that my colleagues spoke to you in a dismissive and rude manner. This is not the service that you can expect from us. My apologies. I’m happy to look into the notes from these previous conversations.

The information @eric gave you about the bundles, the information on the website and the bundles for calling is completely true. I’m very sorry to hear that you got stranded abroad, however I don’t believe this is our fault, because you bought a GB bundle when you assumed you could also call within that bundle. You were able to call, correct? Just not for free within that bundle. I don’t understand how that got you stranded overseas. Please inform me if I’m missing something.

If my colleagues forwarded a case to another department to research something, then I can understand if they asked you to wait, due to processing time from that department. I can’t say much about what exactly happened, if they were rude, I apologize. If it’s because of a language barrier, could it be possible that it  was miscommunication or interpretation?

Please reply to the DM I’ve sent you. After that, I can look into your account and see what I can find about your earlier conversations and give my colleagues the feedback to do better next time.
