AON fiber stopped working after switching to SFP module

Hi,

I’ve switched my router to the Unifi Cloud Gateway Fiber and purchased this SFP module by FS that matches the RX/TX of my media converter. The goal is to stop using the media converter and plug the fiber directly into the router. I also got the correct fiber patch cable for that.

The problem is that it didn’t work. The SFP module was detected, but no internet, I’ve made the correct settings (VLAN 300, link speed 1gbps duplex, automatic negotiation off).

I restarted the router a few times and no luck, so I went back to the media converter, and the internet worked at first. Then, I tried again to use to the router with the SFP module. Again, it didn’t work. Only this time, even switching back to the AON media converter doesn’t work anymore. So I don’t have internet anymore.

Is this related to the MAC address changing too often? What do I have to do in order to have my connection back? And preferably, using the SFP module. The module is now still connected, and it shows it shows some data (KB) in the Tx, but no Rx. So I guess the cable and module are fine and it is transmitting, only not receiving anything back? Does something has to be done on Odido side?

Now the original media converter works again. Is there any extra step needed when using my own SFP module?

Making sure you have GPON SFP if you have a GPON media converter, or a XGS-PON SFP when you have a XGS-PON ONT. You didn’t specify the current make and type of your media converter.

Then… when you have (G)PON you can just copy the serial number from the media converter in your SFP settings to make it work. If you have XGS-PON, you need to register the SFP serial number with Odido.

If you start making changes to the fiber connection,  you could break something. No RX could mean that the optics in the FTU box are damaged, maybe you used a wrong connector type?

When the FTU needs to be repaired, the grid provider will send you an invoice for that. So, be really precise in what you do there or hire a local IT technician.

Hi @eric. Thanks for the reply. I’m very confident the connector type in the box is correct. I also changed the patch cables very carefully, so I think it’s unlikely something broke. I’ll call customer service and ask them if a MAC release is possible.

@rvk01 Thanks for the reply. I asked (with pictures of my converter) in another thread and I got a confirmation that I have AON. Was it supposed to work straight away then?

For AON you shouldn’t need to clone the serial number. So it should work if you just set VLAN to 300.

I’m not sure if mentioned SFP module is the correct one. Maybe someone else knows.

@rvk01 the media converter says inside: “Dual Rate, Single mode 10km, TX/RX: 1310/1550”. This matches the spec of the FS module I bought. I also saw someone else recommending it here.

The weird thing to me is that the SFP+ port does become green in the router UI, so I believe the module, cables and connection are fine. The port settings too: VLAN set to 300, port set to 1Gbps FDX. Still, I don’t get internet connection.

A mechanic came by today to check and he couldn’t get it working either, not even with the original media converter. But some time after he left, things started to work again with the original converter. He did call Odido, so I’m wondering if they made a remote reset. At least the original media converter works again. Not my FS module though (I tried again and reverted to the original media converter quickly this time to avoid having no internet at all again).

The weird thing is that ethtool shows that there is a connection from the other side, only for some reason I'm not getting internet connection.

Do you get an (external) IP and/or DNS servers via dhcp for the UCG?

Hmm i think the problem is mac related. try waiting 1h or call customer support and request a “mac release” the shuld have a button for that on a AON connection. there use to be a limit of 2 concurrent mac adresses for modem swap. only the Technicians can do it from there service page. so mabe the changed that ? anyway am i correct that you move from a rj45 port to a fiber port on the same device ? that might be the reason for the conflict in this case.

@Hidden.nld I just spoke with Odido customer service. They asked me to connect my original modem again so they could do operations remotely, but the option to release the MAC address wasn't available (I understood it's not available for AON connection. He also mentioned my connection is p2p).

If I run tcpdump on my router to capture traffic for that STF+ port on VLAN 300 (eth6.300) I see my device requests an IP address do the DHCP server but gets no response.

I even tried changing the MAC address for the STF+ port to the one they informed me in the customer service (from my original modem registered in the network). I see when requesting the DHCP the MAC they provided. But no luck with cloning the MAC address either.

They couldn't help me more and pointed me to ask for more help in the community, so here is my last hope...

@Waqqas sorry for the ping, but you helped me to identify my connection was AON before. Maybe you have an idea on how to solve this problem? Thanks!

Hi @andre3d

I’d like to take a look at the problem together with you.

For that, I just need a bit more information from you. Could you please complete your profile with your postal code, house number, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your bank account number? You can do this by clicking your avatar in the top right → My Profile → Edit Profile.

As well please connect the SFP to your UCG-Fiber so I can have a look when it does not work.

@Sven-Odido I couldn’t reply to you on private since you don’t follow me, but I did what you asked, I plugged my SFP to my UCG-Fiber and to my surprise, this time it worked! Super happy with that.

I did nothing different than in my previous attempts. Just out of curiosity, did you take any action from your side? Or maybe because I waited 1 month since my last attempted something was cleared up? Thanks.

Whoeps Sorry I forgot I have that setting on hahah

Cool! I didn't do anything yet. Nothing needs to be cleared up as long as you don't use more then two different modems within an hour. Then still the oldest will clear up after an hour.

So your just started working after plugging it in one time?
