Starting a week ago I can't access anymore the website vk.com I get the message "this site can't be reached". The problem started first wih wifi and now with both wifi and mobile network.

It is still possible to access vk.com using a vpn.

Is Odido bloking this website and why?

Beste antwoord door Teresa van Odido

The European Council has decided that internet service providers in Europe must block a number of specific Russian media websites. Odido Netherlands is bound by European laws and regulations and is therefore required to comply with this decision. As a result, Odido has made the websites of several Russian broadcasters inaccessible.

All Dutch and European providers of mobile and fixed internet are required to implement this blockade. Good to know. We do not share an overview of all websites that have been blocked.

@Waqqas What DNS server are you using ???

The DNS from Odido resolves vk.com to a very strange IP adres.

On my new KPN line I have this:

>nslookup vk.com 192.168.2.1
Server: mijnmodem.kpn
Address: 192.168.2.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: vk.com
Addresses: 87.240.132.78
87.240.132.67
87.240.132.72
87.240.137.164
93.186.225.194
87.240.129.133

This should be correct and the I get onto the site (login).

Odido router gives me this:

>nslookup vk.com 192.168.3.1
Server: home
Address: 192.168.3.1

Name: vk.com
Address: 3.126.45.54

And I get a timeout.
Even the real DNS servers from Odido give that same wrong result 🙄

>nslookup vk.com 37.143.84.228
Server: public-dns-primary.glasoperator.nl
Address: 37.143.84.228

Name: vk.com
Address: 3.126.45.54

>nslookup vk.com 62.58.48.20
Server: public-dns-secondary.glasoperator.nl
Address: 62.58.48.20

Name: vk.com
Address: 3.126.45.54

The 3.126.45.54 seems to be from Amazon.
The 87.x.x.x goes to Russia (VKontakte Services??).

It works with VPN but why shall I pay a VPN service? All of the devices I tried connected to my wifi have the same problem and I have the same problem with mobile network(DNS cannot be found). I restarted the router but nothing changed

Cloudflare DNS servers.

@lucaxxx90

There are lots of free VPN services, on your phone use Urban VPN for example.

You can also try changing the DNS servers.

Maybe you're facing problems with Odido DNS servers because it's a Russian website.

Not sure where you changed is, but you can set that custom DNS in the router itself so it will be ‘pushed’ automatically to all devices. When the devices renew contact with the router, they get that DNS. (Easier than assigning it per device manually, if that’s what you did 😉)

But even if Odido blocked this because of a Russian site… they should redirect the IP to a site saying that’s the case. Now the 3.126.45.54 just times out. I think this is an error in the Odido DNS configuration.

Look at this article.

No surprise, but VK.com is listed on the reference list of sanctioned media domains.

It is blocked by Lithuania only across entire Europe. Netherlands did not block it, which means that Odido still has to follow “net neutrality” rule to vk.com.

Well, Dutch law is still applicable, because only few Russian web-sites are blocked by the state. Individual provider, like Odido, still has to follow Dutch “net neutrality” rule and provide fair access to the internet. Other providers across the country do not block Russian sites just because it is Russian, only if the state commands it.

On a KPN fiber connection I can’t reach the site either.

On a Ziggo connection I get redirected to https://www.ziggo.nl/yarrr

I tested on KPN mobile, sorry.

Still, there is no official statement regarding vk.com .

With the standard KPN DNS servers? Mmm, they should have blocked it there too.

If you use 1.1.1.1 (or other public DNS server) then it will be reachable (just tested).

1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 and many other public DNS servers are outside of Europe jurisdiction so they don’t block these sites.

You can change it in your computer or phone itself or change it in the router. When changing it in the router, that DNS server will be served to the clients when they reestablish contact. Just say what you prefer and we can guide you. (in the router it is on 192.168.1.1, login on the back, and then under three lines, upper right, netwerinstellingen, thuisnetwerk, statisch dns and then the value).

Hello @nikol

To change the DNS servers log in on the router interface. In the menu go to netwerkinstellingen, thuisnetwerk, LAN configuratie, under DNS waarden choose statische DNS and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and click on toepassen.

Restart your router after this.

Restart your router after this.

Router restart is not needed (because these are settings sent to the client, not used in the router).

You do need to reconnect the clients to the router (so restart all the clients).

(If you don’t restart the clients, they keep the lease, even if the router briefly restarted, and these changes are not directly done.)

by which Dutch ruling?  If there is one, then I give up, but there is none. Therefore, it is arbitrary and Odido takes on censoring function.

If they block it on the DNS for a fiber connection, it would be logical that they would do the same on the DNS servers for mobile.

The fourth site (and the others) on the list is also blocked by KPN. And that one only has a one in EE - TTJA column. So I think just all those sites are blocked. You can read more about in in the link in the quote below.

EE - TTJA  is Estonia. Are we living there?

Only RT and Sputnik are mentioned in the linked document.
Yes, later it was expanded, with few other sites.

Like I said. It’s not just that a one in that column means only that country needs to block it. EVERY SITE on that list needs to be blocked.

The number 1 in the column is just the source where the website request blocking comes from.

From the explanation:

In this document, the domain lists available to us from national regulators in EU member states — namely Germany (BNetzA), Austria (RTR), Estonia (TTJA), Finland (Traficom) and Lithuania (LRTK) — as well as the list published by the Danish trade association Teleindustrien, have been retrieved, analyzed, deduplicated and combined into one consolidated reference list (tab 2). Subdomains that appeared on some lists, but were already covered by wildcard entries on the same or other lists, have been removed.

So EVERY site needs to be blocked from that list.

For the appropriate law… read the link I gave in the earlier post.

It’s DNS blocked by all the European provider DNS’s. Other public (non European) DNS servers don’t block this. They also say they know DNS blocking isn’t an effective tool 🤣 So yes, if it’s a problem… just change your DNS server...

NLconnect is the trade association of the Dutch telecoms, broadband and fiber industry. Members include telecoms contractors, equipment vendors, mobile and fixed operators and ISP’s. We are not in favor of such DNS blocking measures: we support a free and open internet, and DNS blocking is not a very effective tool. Moreover, DNS is a fundamental internet protocol, and interfering with it could undermine trust in the proper functioning of the internet itself. We therefore supported our members Freedom Internet and A2B Internet, who—together with others in the Freedom of Internet Coalition—brought a case before the Court of Justice of the European Union against this measure. Challenges in implem

Hm, why Odido denies blocking referring to some technical issues?

https://www.nlconnect.org/over-ons/nlconnect-reference-list-of-sanctioned-media-domains

“Dutch providers individually expanded their blocking lists based on their best interpretation of the EU measures.”

Solution would be easy - acknowledge the blocking.

PS. for fun, will poll my contacts across the Europe.

Who denies the blocking? Did you call them? A customer service person with no knowledge of anything?

There has not yet been an explanation/reaction from a moderator (from Odido) in this topic. There are only fellow customers here in this topic until now.

But the situation seems clear (although Odido could have created a landing page with more explanation like Ziggo and KPN do, Hey, maybe a good idea @Odido ). But they block all those sites. And if you want to go around it, set your one of the public DNS servers in your router.

  • yes, I called them - two weeks ago.
  • reply was - we know the issue. we received quite few complaints already
  • we work on resolution

Would love to see landing pages of KPN and Ziggo.
NLConnect is not a government body and is not regulator, like ACM.
NLConnect clearly states, that ACM does not reply to requests of blocking confirmations.

Hence, actions of internet providers goes against clear regulation of “net neutrality”.
