Can I have my Ubiquiti Dream Machine behind Odido fiber connection?

Hello,
Apologies for posting in English, but my Dutch is not strong enough, yet. I tried to use Google translator as much as I could to translate most of the comments. Thank you for support so far. I am currently using Ziggo and I have their modem in bridged mode behind which I have my own Ubiquiti Dream Machine set as the main router and WIFI. In a few weeks I am moving to a location where there is just Delta and Odido as fiber optic connection. I am looking to keep the same setup as I have now, so UDM and the rest of the network. This means that I will need to set the modem provided by my future ISP in bridge mode. It is my understanding that this is not possible directly. From your experience, what would be the easiest solution for me, who is not that tech savvy, to be able to continue using UDM and the rest of my setup? Thanks.

With Odido over Delta you will get an ONT (Nokia) and a Zyxel router. The ONT is an active fiber box (powered) which is connected to the current passive fiber termination box. From the ONT there is a normal utp/cat6 cable to the Zyxel router.

The upside at Odido is that you can remove the Zyxel router and just connect the cat6 cable directly to your Ubiquiti Dream Machine (after the mechanic installed the Zyxel and left). The only thing is that you need to set VLAN 300 (but you can get help with that here on the community). So there is no need to set something in bridge.

So you can keep your familiar setup without problem.

Thank you for taking time to respond to my initial question. In case I need telephony, I assume the Zyxel box is required, or the telephone line comes out of the Nokia device? Sorry, not sure what ports the ONT has.

Yes. For telephony you need the Zyxel. (The ONT does not have phone capabilities. It's just a 'converter' for fiber to utp/cat6.)

Although... You could just put a VoIP/sip phone in your network and use that. (What kind of phone do you have now?)

Another option (if you want to use an existing phone) you could buy a ATA (also a sort of box with sip/VoIP) where you can connect an old phone.

A last option would be to still use the Zyxel and put the UDM in the DMZ (a zone where all traffic is automatically forwarded to that device). That's the closest to "bridge" mode on the Zyxel.

Ps. You could also port you phone number to one of the many VoIP providers (which often are cheaper). But then you'll still need some device to connect your phone to (or use a ready made VoIP/sip phone).

Thank you for your useful responses, What you are suggesting makes sense. I wonder if I it will work if I put the Zyxel behind my UDM and then use the telephone output to connect to my phone.

No, unfortunately that will not work. The custom firmware of the Zyxel expects VLAN 300 on it's WAN port. If it's not VLAN 300 it won't connect. Plus in that case the Zyxel would be behind the UDM with all the problems of VoIP behind another router.

Your best bet is to put the UDM in the DMZ of the Zyxel... or to use another device telephony and connect the UDM directly to the ONT.

Yesterday I installed the internet and everything works great as per your suggestion. UDM is set on VLAN 300 and things are working as they should. I have a 2Ghz speed and this is what I received when I used the Zyxel box, however, after installing UDM, the speed doesnt go over 9ooMps. I am not sure where the problem is. Another question, I have read somewhere that the Nokia ONT is using the 192.168.2.x subnet for something else and I should avoid using it on my UDM. The thing is that I have everything currently configured under that subnet. Are you aware if this will create any issues?

I also have 192.168.2.x range for internal network and a Nokia ONT. That shouldn't be a problem. I even think that the ONT from Nokia itself doesn't have an IP (unlike the Huawei which does have an internal ip).

For the speed... doesn't the UDM do something like Intrusion Detection/Prevention System (IDS/IPS) and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)? Maybe you can test the speed after turning that off briefly (to see if it makes any difference).

could it be that UDM has max 1Gbps ethernet interfaces?

You are correct. My mistake, I am using a Dream Router 7 and not UDM - so it should support 2g just fine,
