Move abroad (temporarily) and keep my number

In the near future, I might be moving abroad and for some months (maybe even a year or so), I will not have a permanent address (I will be moving around). Is it possible for me to keep my number? I’m perfectly fine to continue paying my subscription fees. I will likely not use it much, but on occasion I need to send/receive a text or two.

My only concern is that I will not have a permanent address. Is that going to be a problem?

Hello @elektito I completely understand that you want to keep your number, since you will soon be going abroad. I'll be happy to give you more clarity on that!

You can always choose to adjust your subscription to the lowest bundle, as W also points out. You can also choose to convert your subscription (after one month's notice) to a Prepaid connection. This way your number will remain active with us.

You do need to keep your Prepaid active once every 6 months. With active use we mean:

  • Calling yourself (if the call is answered)
  • Recording someone else's voicemail
  • Sending text messages
  • Top up credit yourself
  • Mobile internet
  • Forwarded call (only if the party forwarded to accepts the call).

Under no active use:

  • Being called (picking up or not makes no difference)
  • Outgoing calls that are not answered
  • Own voicemail that is recorded
  • Text messages received
  • Top-ups made by Odido itself (for example, as a promotion or via the goodwill tool)
  • Forwarded calls (if the party forwarded to does not answer the call).

As long as you perform 1 of the above points once every 6 months, your number will remain active with us. To come back to your question about your address: if you order a new Prepaid card online, you do need an address. You can also drop by one of our stores, where my colleagues can provide you with a Prepaid SIM card right away. Then there is no need to register an andres with your Prepaid connection. We can also convert your current subscription to a Prepaid connection, so you don't have to buy a new SIM card either. This can be done at the earliest after one month's notice. We can no longer process cancellations via our Community. In this case, it is best to contact one of our sales advisors by phone by calling: 0800-0092. This can be done from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00 and on Saturday from 09:00 to 17:30. They will be happy to help you!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Hello @elektito

But your address is the Netherlands remains the same? If yes than you can simply adjust your bundle to the lowest possible in your Odido account.

Or else you can call the customer support to cancel the subscription and transfer your number to prepaid.

Prepaid is always tricky as it needs action to keep alive and also prepaid roaming outside the EU is much more restricted than a subscription.

So, how important is your number and ability to use thr service as choice for pre or postpaid.

@Waqqas I expect I will not have an NL address during this period.

@eric I haven't thought about prepaid before. Would that be okay without an address then? What other benefits would it have? Tbh, I'm not even sure if a subscription necessarily needs an address or not.Thats's why I'm asking here.

Thanks for all the information. Let's double check one thing then: is it against the rules to keep my current sim card and subscription as is without updating my address information? That would mean that, for a while, the wrong physical address will be listed for my subscription.

Hi @elektito that's certainly not against the rules. You can just leave the address then. Just keep in mind that if someone else at the address has a mobile or Internet subscription, Customer Advantage (Klantvoordeel) will be applied. But you are not entitled to it.

If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know!

So I sent this question via Odido support form too a couple weeks ago and today I got a response telling me that a fixed Dutch address is indeed needed. So I have two conflicting answers now! :)

So which one is true?

I also asked about prepaid and they said prepaid can work. But then, I can't find any information about how roaming might work or not. I will be mostly outside EU.

@elektito

Indeed you need to fill in a fixed NL address, what @Pharwin van Odido meant was no need to change the address I think.

My friend has been in the same situation before. He used my address and that didn't cause any problems.

Odido's communication mostly goes via the app/telephone/email.

Can I change the address to someone in Germany? I don't know anyone in NL who can do this for me.

@elektito

It has to be a NL address.

There is little information about prepaid while outside the EU. It is not really mend for it. Some countries do not allow the specifid needs for prepaid from other countries, it needs realtime charging for voice instead of CDR's with postpaid subscriptions.

So, if it is just to keep your NL number with you, fine, no problem. If you really want mobile service outside NL you better buy a local prepaid simcard in these countries.

The only thing I'm interested in, besides keeping my number, is to receive SMS. (And maybe send one every once in a while to keep the number active.) Do you think that would be possible? Or does the lack of proper support mean that won't work?

Really hard to tell. Sms is the most simple version with the best reach in the world. But countries like Indonesia often even block receiving sms from abroad. They filter on P2P of M2P etc. Than even a postpaid subscription will not help. They encourage sims from their own country.
