Losing 10 years of history

Hi.

i’ve been a client of Tele2, now Odido, for probably around 10 years. I have used this phone number for everything. Token authentication, close contacts, far contacts, business, fun, everything.

I was happy.

A couple of months ago I started to receive a lot of phone calls, from unknown numbers. I picked up some of these calls, and the people on the other end insisted I called them while I didn’t. I realised my phone umber was being spoofed. I work in cybersecurity, and I know there’s not much to be done here.

Fast forward a few weeks, and I get 20-30 calls per day. Some of those were legitimate, calls that I expected, but didn’t have the number saved (e.g medical appointments, business call, etc) so I could not figure out who to answer and who to not.

Fast forward another week, my number shows up on WieHeeftGebeld with reviews saying that they got called by my phone number, and it was a robotic voice claiming they were ABN Amro employees.

This is where I need help:
1. I know that spoofing cannot be stopped. Did I really just lose my number? And everywhere it was used? Will i be spammed forever? It’s now months.
2. I got a prepaid SIM from another provider (Odido shop told me to buy it from another place). Can I transfer the prepaid SIM to Odido?
3. Can I transfer my current Odido subscription to the newly transferred SIM from point #2.
4. Can I keep my old, original Odido/Tele2 sim from long ago, as a prepaid, so I can keep receiving whatever SMS tokens I still have active?

I contacted Odido customer service and the only thing I was told is that I can get a new number. Thanks, but then I lose access to so many things that my life will be blocked.
This is dreadful. It’s years and years. I would appreciate some help on how to tackle this. Thank you.

Hi Alegos, 10 years at Tele2 and Odido - that's amazing, and I love to see this! Happy to hear that you were also happy. I'm very sorry to hear that your number has been used for spoofing, and that it escalated to this. You're right, there is not much what we can do about numbers being used for spoofing. Let's see what I can help you with!

  1. You haven't lost your number. It's still yours, and your subscription is still active. All the extra places that you're using your phone number for still have your phone number for verification, tokens, etc. I wish I could be more specific, but it's not possible for me tell you about if your number will be kept using for spoofing. It might as well be over soon, or it can keep going. It is your decision if you want to change your number. Because I totally understand that this situation is not ideal for you, and the people trying to call you.
  2. Do you want to use your PrePaid phone number from the other provider as a PrePaid or subscription with us? Yes, you can transfer your number to us if you order PrePaid/subscription and request number porting (nummerbehoud).
  3. Do I understand correctly: Do you want to change/transfer your current subscription/phone number to a PrePaid from another provider? Yes, you can do this. Please note that your current contract runs until 23-12-2026. If you want to cancel your subscription with us before that date, you will have to pay a cancellation fee (100% of your device credit, first month 100% and 50% of the remaining months that your contract would still run with us).
  4. This is also possible. We can change your subscription to PrePaid. This way you will also keep your current sim card.

I'm happy to think out loud with you on this situation. If you don't want to change your number, because of all the 3rd party websites, and organizations, you could make a list of all the apps, organizations, website, etc. where you've filled in your number, and (temporarily) change it to your current PrePaid phone number. That way, you will keep all the access to these parties. The easiest and fastest thing to do afterwards is to change your phone number and keep your current subscription. That way, you can (if you want) change the phone number back to your new phone number, so you will receive all tokens on your main phone number instead of your PrePaid. This is how I would personally do it. Because this way, you won't have to deal with changing not 1, but 2 subscription/PrePaid, and you will also have no extra costs (the cancellation fee). I can help you change your number one time for free.

But of course, the decision is yours. Just think about it and let me know what is best for you. I'm here when you are ready to make a decision or if you have any other questions! 😄
