linksys velop replacing Zyxel T-54

Good afternoon,

everything was working fine for more than 2 years and suddenly I get internet drops from my Linksys Velop MX5300 mesh… my setup is this one, fiber media converter → Zyxel T-54 → Linksys Velop mx5300.

I restarted the mesh, went back to factory settings….

a technician came and checked, modem is working fine, so he suggested that I try to remove the modem and plug directly from the converter to the linksys. only problem is, in the setup it ask for a username and password. could I get one?

there is no VLAN tab in my settings, only when I put PPPoE

I just swapped the devices and so far it seems to do the trick!

so now the wiring is Zyxel → MX5300 wan → mx5300 node Lan

🤞 I hope it will still work like this

thanks for the help

If this is a consumer subscription you need to choose dhcp instead of pppoe. And fill in VLAN 300.

If it's a business subscription you need to contact the helpdesk to obtain the settings (including username, password and VLAN id).

it is a consumer subscription and when I choose dhcp I don't have a way to put the vlan

Then go into network (or look around) and look for IPTV. Fill in VLAN 300 there.

But I thought there should be a VLAN tab in the Velop series. Is this device on the latest firmware?

Hello @damienroque

I have seen muliple users having the same issue with their Linksys mesh system. Connecting it to the ONT doesn't seem to be possible so use the mesh system in Acces Point Mode or disable one DHCP servers if there are 2.

Some Linksys router do have the option for DHCP VLAN 300.

Did you apply the dhcp yet? (I don't see a ip there) Maybe the VLAN tab will only appear when you get an external ip.

no iptv settings…. it seems vlan support is only for pppoe :S DHCP was applied and no vlan.

worst things ever...worked for 2 years without any issues and now already bad :S thinking to switch to unifi

If there is still no VLAN tab, then look under the Wifi-button (left) and then Advanced. Is IPTV there?

I activated the iptv but no vlan settings...I tried to restart it and plug it but it was the same…

I start to think this is just crap but 2 years of lifespan is a bit short even when used intensely

It's weird you can't set any VLAN for IPTV. Then I'm also at a loss. Is this device on firmware 1.1.12.210066?

I know the MX5300 also supports OpenWRT custom firmware. And that one, according to this page, should support VLAN. But then you should be comfortable flashing new firmware and we don't even know if this is really the issue, because the device also worked poorly as only AP behind a Zyxel. But if it's a choice between scrapping the device or just trying it out...

Another option would be to get Odido to replace the Zyxel T-54 for a Zyxel T-56 (with wifi 6) because you are on fiber and then rent an extra wifi plus point as second mesh unit.

I’m on latest software for the mx5300 v1…it seems to not be available for that one :( I saw the custom firmware but I don’t have experience in flashing stuff. The weird part which make me think it could be material is that it worked for 2 years without issues

Ok. Then we can go back to the beginning (with the Th54 setup). What exactly is the problem there?

It has internet? And when connecting the LAN 1 from Zyxel to the WAN of the first MX5300, does the LAN 1 show 1000M/Full in the interface of the Zyxel (when connecting a computer to LAN 2 of the Zyxel.

It's probably best to disable wifi on the Zyxel as you want to use the mesh of the Linksys.

So zyxel gets internet (my computer is on Ethernet directly to it as checkup) then lan to the wan of Linksys. Wi-Fi off on the zyxel everything shows 1000m but after a while (30min-1h) lan stops on the Linksys but not on the computer

Ok, and what does Zyxel show in it's interface under systeminformation for LAN 1 (the port to which the Linksys is connected) at the moment Linksys looses connection? If it shows connected then you need to look in the Linksys interface to see why you don't have internet anymore (try that by wiring the computer to a LAN port of the Linksys). Has it lost its WAN ip of 192.168.1.x? (because the Linksys gets a 192 ip as external ip, seeing it from the Linksys).

Does the Linksys has a log page or something to check?

When it looses connection in the interface, the plug drawing goes black like if disconnected. I tried of course different cables

Yeah. That seems a problem with the MX5300. You already tried factory reset.

Is the first MX5300 installed as router mode (dhcp). Or did you choose bridged (AP)?

BTW. You could try switching the mx5300 devices (they came as a set I believe?) so the other one will become main AP.

I tried dhcp and bridge mode. The only thing I didn’t try was to swap them

Let us now if switching the devices help.

BTW. How did you wire the devices?

If router/dhcp mode, it's Zyxel lan to mx5300 wan. And then mx5300 lan to other mx5300 lan (or via wireless). In that mode you shouldn't wire the second mx5300 to the Zyxel (but if wire only to the main mx5300).

When in AP mode, you can do Zyxel lan to mx5300 lan.

The Zyxel will provide router capability in that case. In this option (ap-mode) you could use any of the lan ports on both sides. So if it's a port issue, you could try different ports if both the Zyxel and main mx5300 (when in AP mode). If that still doesn't work, it might be an overall device problem.

Didn’t last long…..it keeps on crashing every 30minutes now ….

is there a way to ask for a new modem to rule this out?

Hi @damienroque, I can definitely swap the Zyxel T-54 to a T-56 if you would like this. Can you please add your zip code, house number, date of birth and the last 4 digits of your bank account number to your community profile? That way I can access your subscription and swap the modem for you. You can leave a message in this topic as soon as you have added the information and you would like the swap!

Hi @damienroque, thank you for updating your details! I have immediately requested the modem swap for you and a new Zyxel T-56 will be sent your way. As soon as the packages has been handed over to DHL, you will receive an e-mail so you can track the package. You will also receive instructions from us on how to return the old modem back to us. Will you keep me updated as soon as you have received the T-56 and you were able to test this out?
