Warning! Odido’s Non‑Transparent Roaming Charges Are a Rip‑Off

Hi everyone,

I want to share a recent experience that exposed how misleading Odido’s roaming policies can be:

  • I purchased the roaming bundle for Turkey for €30, expecting full roaming functionality.

  • In an emergency, I had to call my Dutch health insurer (a Netherlands number).

  • To my shock, Odido charged me €51 for that single call.

  • Odido’s response: “Data only—calls aren’t included. No refunds.”

My thoughts on this:

  • Zero Transparency: The app never warns that calls (even to home‑country numbers) are billed separately at exorbitant per‑minute rates.

  • No Pre‑Purchase Alert: I received an SMS about data rates only—no pop‑up or notification about call fees.

  • Unfair Pricing: Paying €51 for one emergency call feels like extortion, especially when the bundle itself cost less. I had to pay 81 euros more (5 times more of an average mobile service bundle cost)

 I Want to Know

  1. Have you faced similar hidden roaming fees with Odido?

  2. Which countries and bundles caught you off guard?

  3. What alternatives (bundles or providers) offer truly transparent, fair roaming rates?

Let’s Take Action

  • Raise awareness so no one else falls into this roaming trap.

  • Collect and share real‑world tips for clear, affordable roaming solutions.

  • Push Odido to update their infra for pre‑purchase warnings.

Please share your stories and recommendations below! Together we can demand better service and transparency.

I think you need to get back on your feet when thinking that when you order a roaming bundle that also voice is included.

It is a wll known principle  that you can order a databundle to allow for a better rate than “ pay as you go” data charges while this does not apply on voice calls. I can imagine while Dutch is not your native language that you need read more carefull all the information which is avaliable for customers.

https://www.odido.nl/service/buitenland/buiten-eu

All information writes: “ Internet Op Reis” which translates to “ internet while traveling” Specifically what you can but while roaming.

On: https://www.odido.nl/service/producten/mobiel/buitenland/tarieven-dekking/turkije you get specific tarrifs for your subscription when you fill in your phonenumber.

Also here, it is clearly stated that INTERNET op reis passes can be bough for X amount of data for Y price.

So, But you cannot call this “ a trap”, it is just your disadvantage of not able to understand Dutch.

For the costs, that is also very transparent. It cost 1 euro and 50 cents per minute, so 51 euro means a call for half an hour.  You are roaming outside EU countries, you should expect or lookup that these costs will occur.  A local sim to make local calls or a voip solution ( f.e. whatsapp) can avoid this.

I understand that in an emergancy you do not think on this, you need to call. Than accept that this is the result which helped you during this emergancy. If you have a travel insurance, in most cased telecommunication costs during emergancies are covered in there.

Thank you for taking your time to share your perspective. I must, however, disagree with your defense of Odido. Moreover, I find it puzzling that customers are expected simply to accept Odido’s current practices. Could you please clarify why the responsibility for improvement is placed on users, rather than on Odido to proactively enhance its services and transparency?

  1. No Dedicated “Call/SMS” Bundle
Today’s market expects operators to offer specialized data bundles for example, lower‑rate “call” or “messaging” packages. The absence of any such option is a significant service gap and puts customers at a disadvantage, particularly when data‑only bundles carry premium rates.

  2. Unnecessarily High Call Costs
If Odido cannot provide a targeted “call” plan, it should at least cap or minimize charges for basic online activities. As it stands, customers are forced to burn through expensive data bundles—or incur exorbitant pay‑as‑you‑go rates—simply to look up critical information.

  3. Limited English‑Language Support
In an increasingly globalised environment, the lack of comprehensive English‑language guidance is indefensible. Key product details, app notifications, and SMS alerts should be fully bilingual to ensure that all customers clearly understand roaming terms and fees. Even the links you have sent (https://www.odido.nl/service/buitenland/buiten-eu and https://www.odido.nl/service/producten/mobiel/buitenland/tarieven-dekking/turkije) are in Dutch only (?) I hope you understand my point.

In my view, these shortcomings demonstrate why stronger transparency and more customer‑centric offerings are needed from Odido. Thank you again for the discussion I hope these points help clarify why many of us are calling for meaningful improvements.
