Hello guys!

I have ordered glasvezel internet from odido nad was wondering how they gonna install the modem since KPN did installed the cable till meterkast which is outside the apartment in front of the door.

So my question is are they gonna put a new cable from KPN glasvezel point in the meterkast through the same place which telefone line and IS/RA comes to living room and there place the modem or they gonna leave the modem at the meterkast and from there they lay a ethernet cable to the living room?

I would like to get the best connection for my use in the living room.(using short ethernet cable drirectly from the modem in the living room to my devices for the best download/upload speed and low ping/latency)

Thanks!

Hi @ArashNik ,

The internet engineer if Odido will install an ONT and router in the meterkast, next to the FTU of KPN. From there is it up to you to create the LAN network. The easiest to use are powerplugs. The electricity network will carry your ethernet signal to a central point in your home,  where you put the other powerplug in electricity outlet. There you can plug in a switch, or an Wifi access point.

So it does take a bit more stuff at your side that will be your own or a local installation computer company.

It’s also possible to pull a cable through the same pipe as the current telephone line. You would need to connect RJ45 connectors on both ends. In that case you can put the Zyxel router inside your home (for beter wifi coverage) connected by that ethernet-cable to the ONT in the utility closet.

I would disconnect the telephone cable so there is no signal on that cable so it won’t interfere with the ethernet cable. You could also remove the telephone cable from the pipe but I’m not sure who is the owner of that cable. Do you have a real ISRA box inside your home (then it’s KPN owned and you should leave the cable). If the ISRA-box is in the utility closet and in your home there is only a wall socket, then the cable is yours (and could be removed if you don’t use it anymore).

But yes… all that is extra work which you would need to do yourself (or by someone on order by you).

Here you can see the situation! at the moment I have a Ziggo internet and modem is in the living room connected to the switch in the second photo on the left side! In the past I had DSL internet from T-mobile which the plug is also in the living room. So the company Guidion is coming to install and activate the modem. But not sure if they gonna lay a cable to install the modem in the living room or just leave it at he meterkast! I hope they install and arrange the modem in the living room! They asked me to be sure that there is a power plug in the meterkast or have a extension power cable by meterkast since they have to activate and test the internet by meterkast!

I take it that second photo is also from the utility closet. I'm surprised you get a good signal with the Ziggo modem connected to the coax splitter. Normally the modem connection should be in front of the splitter, not after.

Hopefully the installers can pull a cable through one of the pipes but I wouldn't count on it. It's normally not their job to pull wiring beyond the installation point (which is in the utility closet) without an order and extra costs.

You could try to work with those powerline thingies like Eric suggested but then the outlets would ideally need to be on the same circuit breaker. And you loose some speed etc. So the best option is to see if you can pull an Ethernet cable through one of those pipes.

Do the coax cables (I see two) run through the same pipe as the old telephone/DSL pipe?

Ideally you would have a dedicated phone pipe so you can run your Ethernet cable in there (phone wire isn't that wide so there might be space). If the phone wire with two coax all run through one pipe, yikes, that might be very crowded in that pipe so you might not have space. So see if there is some pipe where you have space going to the home. If you know which pipe it is, the installers might be inclined to give some assistente (but there is no guarantee). I'm not even sure the installers have rj45 connectors and Ethernet cable in their vans to do these jobs.

Hello @ArashNik

Guidion can also install an internetcable from the meterkast to the DSL connection point in your living room, you will have to pay extra for this. If you want Guidion to do this please inform them first.

They might  do that when there is an empty pipe. That is not the case here.

So, if the phone line is the only one in one pipe, it might be important to remove it first? The ISRA point is in the utility closet so it should not be problem to do that. I'm sure they can also do it too, because it's just pulling it out, and maybe if it's still present they can even use that cable to pull the ethernet cable (instead of using pulling wire)?

If the two coax cables run through the same pipe, then that might get a bit crowded 😬

Ok interesting! Is it possible for better connection etc ask/order to use the same orange glasvezel internet cable for the extension from meterkast to the living room instead of internet cable?

and if they use internet cable is it gonna be a special cable that does not lose much internet speed or increase latency?

But I dont understand KPN odido etc companies advertise glasvezel but internet connection in the houses are not equipped or ready for glasvezel connection! What is the point if only is possible to leave the modem in the meterkast outside the apartment or have to pay much extra to lay about 20m internet cable which you might lose internet speed and increase latency and noise!

anyway Which service then should I add on? (by the way apartment is a rental place)

@ArashNik

The orange cable going into the glasvezelaansluitpunt cannot be extended to your living room so it will be a normal internetcable. Let's first wait and see if Guidion is able to install the cable when they are there.

If you go for the powernet adapters, do not buy the cheapest onces but something like this.

So I had contact with odido and they said I can ask the montor to place the modem where ever I want! And it seems there is limited time free installation fee(normally €105) so I dont have to pay anything! So let see.

In other hand I have double checked and saw that they need to install electricity power plug in the meterkast for the TK01 and then from there internet cable(rj45) from one of the PVC leidingen coax or telephone wire to living room.

Now my question is for the best connection which internet cable shall I use? UPT,FPT,S/FPT? Cat5e or Cat6, 7 ,8 , 8.1 ?  By other apartments I saw KPN used Cat5e to bring internet from meterkast to the apartment! Shall I myself buy the best cable to be sure I get most of glasvezel and be future proof! I would need maximum 20m cable from meterkast to living room I believe!(from the plug in the living room to meterkast is about 15m)

The cable depends on the speeds you want to achieve. If you ordered something to max 1 gbit, the 5e is fine.

I do believe that the customer care agent was very optimistic with how guidion engineers do more than the standard installation in the utility room.

Well let say in future if I want to upgrade to 4 gbit with 3 heavy internet users in the house then which Type of cable (UPT,FPT,S/FPT) and which Cat is better to use?

Cat7 is great for that but require specific connnectors and tools. An average Guidion installer will not have that in his car.

Hello @ArashNik

Here you can read about the different cables:
