LAN and WIFI not working

(sorry for the english)

I am a customer since January 2025 more or less and I have internet at home + TV + 2 sim cards.

Since I changed, I had many issue with internet at home (spoiler alert: I think all is related to the router Zyxel EX5601-T1).
All the smart devices I have (since many years) started to be randomly on/off-line (Alexa’s,TV’s, Shelly up to cheap SmartLife devices).
Moreover, since a month, my laptop and the laptop of my wife simply don’t work with both ODIDO wifi & cabled connections.
Reading around I saw that the mesh 2.4G/5G can be a problem with many smart device devices, so I disabled the 5G completely and this seems to have solved the smart devices issue (or at least they go offline much less than before, but still time to time it happens).
But the problem of the laptops are making me nervous. I called few times the assistance but out of hours lost, nothing worked, tried different things (reset the router, swap cables from ports, replace cables, reset network on the laptops..). In one last call I was asked to contact the IT of my employer to solve this (in my laptop). But the laptop works literaly everywhere, it connetcs to just every wifi you can find around, I am not bother my working IT for that. Instead I would easily change provider and go back to KPN where I had NO ISSUE AT ALL iin the last 6 years. Other cabled connection works. Laptops worked well the first 2 months, then nothing. Last time they worked was last week for a couple of days, then nothing again..

I read that the Zyxel router gives many problems. I am currently working from home with Tethering from my mobile phone. Funnny enough, I found out that if I cannot to a TP-link extender of 20 euro, the wifi works!
I am not an IT expert, I can barely connect to my router for some basic stuff, but any suggestion is welcome.
Else, I would kindly ask ODIDO to replace the router with something else, or top be allowed to change provider without any penalty in short time, since this way I cannot go on.
Thanks, and have a nice day

Hi @gianlucagostinelli, I would like to investigate this further! Does the wired connection not work at all or only on these 2 devices? I am also curious if you get a specific error message. Furthermore, I would like to know if you have tested other cables and/or ports in the modem. Thanks in advance!

So, I found out the trick. And apologize but I am the responsible one, I caused it myself :-).

It’s a long story but I would like to explain.

With a TP-link (router#2) I made some time ago an “access point” only for IOT (I used the same network setting of my previous provider) so the IOTs I have got connected to it without re-import them all in the new odido network, and it worked well for a while (with some trouble thou time to time). This access point was placed far from the main router (3 meters). But recently I moved this access point very close to the main router. And I guess there the problems started. Yesterday I disconnected this access point (by chance, was not even intentional) and I found out all was back to normal, wifi and LAN worked well, and only IOTs didn’t work (fairly).

With happiness (and frustration) I realized that this access point was the problem. I removed it but then I had to find a way to connect my IOTs. So, I tried to connect the TP-link as normal “extender”, giving the name and password of my old network to make IOTs working, but I found out that my TP-link, used as extender, just inherits the Wi-Fi password from the main router: I can give the same network name but not the same password of my old network (or I didn’t find a way to do it..) and IOT couldn’t connect.

So, I used a workaround for it. I create a “guest-network” in the Zyxel router (router#1) with the same settings as my old network (wifi name and passord), and let all the IOTs connect to it. And it seems to work, at the moment they are still connected, no issues so far..
I know, I can also rename the main network, but I want to avoid it if possible.

Is it ok to use the guest-net this way or there are cons? Will it work smoothly? and If I want to set up again an access point only for IOTs, how can I avoid they interfere with each other? Chatgpt says:

1- set an IP in router #2 different than router #1 (like 192.168.0.1 if router #1 is 192.168.1.1)
2- disable DHCP in router #1 (make sure it is enabled in router #2)
3- set the gateway of router #2 based on IP of router #1

Thanks for the support, my aopologies again.

Hi @gianlucagostinelli, welcome to our community!

Thank you for reaching out and for taking the time to explain your situation so clearly, I can imagine how inconvenient this must be, especially when you're working from home and relying on a stable connection. Before I can properly investigate this for you and see what options we have, could you please complete your profile details? I’m still missing a few essentials like your postal code, house number, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your IBAN. You can update these by clicking on your avatar in the top-right corner → My ProfileEdit Profile.

In the meantime, here are a few quick tips you might want to try:

  • Make sure Mesh Steering (mesh between 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz) is indeed disabled, but keep the 5Ghz enabled.

  • Set a fixed channel for both WiFi bands to prevent auto-switching issues.

  • If possible, perform a factory reset on the router and reconfigure it manually without Smart Steering enabled.

  • Do you also experience this with a wired connection or is it purely via wifi?

Once your profile details are complete, I’ll check what we can do for you regarding the router situation or other next steps. Looking forward to your update and thanks again for your patience and clear description!

Hi, added the requested data to my profile. I’ll try to do what you suggest (although the factory reset was done many times). Important: yes, I do experience it also with wired connection.

Thanks for the additional information @gianlucagostinelli. At the moment, I don't see anything wrong on the line/modem. However, I can see that the 5 GHz band is still disabled. Would you mind turning it on again and disabling Mesh to see if that fixes the issue? If not, I'll try making some adjustments to the settings to see if that works better!

ok, I did what you mentioned. activated 5G and disabled auto mesh. Moreover I set fixed channels for 2.4G (channel 1) and 5G (channel 36).

But please consider also that the wired connection is not working in the 2 laptops.
