In a week my contract ends and I will need to return the modem. Do I also need to send back the fiberglass converter (the orange thing in the picture)?

Hello
The orange thing is your FTU and belongs to KPN. Your incoming Fiber cable is connected inside that FTU. The little black device is the converter and needs to be returned along with the modem and cables.
