Severe routing/peering issue: slow downloads & websites unless using VPN (Odido Fiber Almere)

Hello Odido Community Team,

I have Odido Fiber in Almere and I’m experiencing a routing/peering problem.
This is not a Wi-Fi or modem issue.

Symptoms

  • Speedtest to Odido servers is always normal (800–900 Mbps).

  • But many real-world services are extremely slow:

    • LinkedIn

    • Atlassian / Jira

    • Hetzner-hosted servers

    • German networks (example: EDV Kossmann, 146.0.33.35)

VPN / mobile hotspot tests

  • With Cloudflare WARP (VPN): everything becomes fast immediately.

  • With mobile hotspot (different provider): everything is fast.

  • Only the direct Odido route is slow. (600Mbps vs 7Mbps)

Pattern

  • After reboot: speed is normal temporarily

  • After 30–60 minutes: speed becomes slow

  • VPN fixes it instantly

  • Hotspot fixes it instantly

Thank you.

Hey @amirsh, welcome to our community!

Thank you for sharing this with us in such detail. It's great that you've already tested and ruled out so many things yourself. That helps enormously. I can imagine that this is very frustrating, especially because your connection seems perfect on paper, but in practice it doesn't work at all. We will of course be happy to investigate this further with you.

Since you indicate that this is not a Wi-Fi or modem problem, but really points to routing/peering, I would like to gather a few more details to pass on to our technical department as accurately as possible. Could you answer a few questions for me?

  • Your IP address (WAN IP) at the time the slowness occurs.
You can find this at: https://www.whatismyip.com (You may mask the last digits if necessary.)

  • A traceroute to 1 or 2 of the slow destinations.
    For example, to:

    • 146.0.33.35 (EDV Kossmann)

    • a Hetzner-server that is slow

    • or an Atlassian/Jira domain

    Windows:
    tracert 146.0.33.35
    Mac/Linux:
    traceroute 146.0.33.35

  • Are you using our standard ONT + modem, or your own router? If so:

    • which router

    • is running VPN, DNS filtering, firewall rules or QoS?

  • Is the problem always reproducible within 30–60 minutes after rebooting?

To investigate this further, I need some information from you. Can you enter your postcode + house number and date of birth in your community profile? Then we can identify the line and investigate this further in a secure manner.

Hi @amirsh, thank you for all the information! I wanted to take a look into your subscription but I see the last 4 digits of your bank account are missing in your community profile. Can you please add them and leave a message in this topic as soon as you have done so? That way I can look into your subscription and help you with this!

Hey @amirsh, thanks for adding your information.

I see you've disabled mesh on the modem. Could you please give the modem a hard reset by pressing the button on the back for 30 seconds and then run a wired speed test with the default settings on the modem? Please run one with VPN and one without. I'm curious to see what the results will be!

Hey @amirsh, thank you for testing it. The upload really doesn't look good, so I've decided to send a technician to test everything. You will receive a message from Guidion shortly to schedule a technician. Could you keep me informed afterwards?

Hi all,

After the Odido technician visit (he confirmed the it’s not a hardware issue and will open a case and left), I continued testing and found the issue is completely related to the WX5600-T0 extender.

Setup:

  • Main router (EX5601-T1) is downstairs

  • WX5600-T0 extender is upstairs, connected to the router by Ethernet

Here are the results:

1. Direct connection to the main router (cable, downstairs)

  • All servers fast (Odido, Hetzner/Kossmann, LinkedIn, Jira)

  • Fast with/without VPN
    → No issue

2. Direct connection to the same Ethernet cable upstairs (the one normally plugged into the extender)

I unplugged the cable from the extender and connected it directly to my MacBook.

  • All servers fast

  • Fast with/without VPN
→ Cable + routing from the main router are perfect

3. When I plug the cable back into the extender and connect my MacBook to LAN2 on the extender

  • Odido server fast

  • Hetzner/Kossmann slow without VPN

  • Hetzner/Kossmann fast with VPN
→ Problem appears only when traffic passes through the extender

4. Same problem on extender WiFi

  • Slow without VPN

  • Fast with VPN

5. EasyMesh ON or OFF makes no difference

Even with EasyMesh OFF (so extender has its own SSID), the issue stays the same.

Conclusion

Everything works perfectly as long as the WX5600-T0 extender is not in the path.
As soon as traffic passes through the extender (LAN or WiFi), certain servers become slow unless VPN is used.

So the issue seems to be how the WX5600-T0 processes traffic internally.

Thanks!

Hi all,
Just a gentle follow-up on this topic 😊

I wanted to check if the technical team has had a chance to look at my findings above.
Happy to provide any extra tests or details if needed.

Thanks in advance!

We did, but honestly it does not make much sense 😅. The wifi extender does not have any influence on the traffic. Its nothing more then a layer 2 Access point. If you can share some more details and tests that would be great. For example do you see the same when using another server then Odido but still in The Netherlands.

Hi Sven, thanks for the response.

I’ve now double-checked all tests again, and the results are fully consistent with what I described earlier. I’ll also share an illustration in this thread to make the different setups clearer.

Below are the exact measurements, using the same MacBook, same IP, same location upstairs, only changing whether the extender is in the path or not.

1. Cable upstairs, but NOT via the extender

(extender unplugged, the Ethernet cable that normally feeds the extender connected directly to my MacBook)

→ Everything is fast, with or without VPN.

2. Using the upstairs extender (Zyxel WX5600-T0), WITHOUT VPN

(cable from router → extender, then MacBook connected to LAN2 on extender)

→ Odido is fast, but Kossmann becomes extremely slow.

3. Using the upstairs extender (Zyxel WX5600-T0), WITH VPN

Because of this, I’ve now disconnected the extender completely. I’m currently using the downstairs Wi-Fi directly; the signal upstairs is weaker and slower, but still more stable and usable than with the extender.

Extender firmware version: V5.70(ACDW.0)b13

Honestly, it feels quite strange that I’ve been paying a monthly subscription for over a year while using a device that clearly caused a degraded internet experience.

If there’s still any doubt, I’m absolutely fine with sending a technician again to verify this on-site.

Looking forward to your feedback on next steps.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @amirsh

Thanks for the explanation. I Did some testing myself with the same setup, but I'm not seeing the same problem. Its already strange that when you are connected to the extender wired the upload to the Odido server drops big time.

Directly on the T56

Directly wired to the Extender

I ran the Kossmann test twice as the first time the upload was a bit lower, but still better then in your test.

I see my colleague replaced your Wi-Fi extender earlier in the month, did you had the same problem on the previous unit? As well could you please connect the Wi-Fi extender so I can have a look at it.

Hi Sven,

Just to clarify: the Wi-Fi extender was not replaced earlier this month.

I received the extender shortly after I started my Odido subscription last year. The first unit had a faulty power adapter, so it was replaced at that time.
Since then, the extender itself has not been changed or replaced.

Thanks!

Hey @amirsh, we have decided to send you a different wifipoint to rule out any equipment issues. Once thewifipoint has been dispatched, you can track the shipment in Mijn Odido. You will receive return instructions for the old wifipoint by e-mail. Could you let us know if it is working properly? Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I’ve now double-checked all my previous findings and wanted to share the final results after receiving the replacement extender.

Results with the new Wi-Fi extender

Without VPN

With VPN

Re-test with the old Wi-Fi extender

Without VPN

With VPN

Wi-Fi tests (upstairs, via new extender)

When testing over Wi-Fi, I still see some differences depending on VPN and destination, but the speeds are no longer extremely low:

  • Without VPN

    • EDV Kossmann (Heinsberg): ~230 Mbps download / ~680 Mbps upload

  • With VPN

    • EDV Kossmann (Heinsberg): ~650–770 Mbps download / ~220–320 Mbps upload

So while there is still a noticeable difference between with vs without VPN for the Kossmann server over Wi-Fi, the speeds are acceptable and usable, unlike before.

Based on all these tests, it seems I was using a faulty extender for about a year. During that time, I paid a monthly fee for it and experienced a poor internet experience without knowing the root cause.

Thanks again for your support and for sending the replacement.

@amirsh Thanks for your efforts and feedback!

I'm really happy that we've found the cause of the issue and the new wifipoint is working as intended. Fantastic!

I've immediately arranged for the costs of the faulty wifipoint to be refunded. You will receive an e-mail confirmation about this, and the amount will be automatically deducted from the next bill.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. If issues arise, you know where to find us. We're always happy to help! 😄
